Floating Cult Sign

Why is there a sign floating above the street here that says "CULT". What's it supposed to mean? Is it short for Culture? It would be a logical abbreviation because this district is filled with cultural spots. It's kind of a hipster art neighbourhood in Rotterdam.

Or is it just pointing to the literal meaning of the word "cult", as in a group of religious fanatics obsessing over some God. Why would you hang that up in the air here? The meaning of why it's there is unclear to me.

So that immediately leaves me with another question. Is it supposed to be unclear or am I just not getting it? This kind of art makes me sort of angry for not getting it on one hand, and on the other hand, it makes me happy because it's not making sense. Everything has to make sense in our rational world. It's refreshing if you encounter things that don't necessarily immediately make sense.

You can only read the sign from this side by the way. If I would've had to come up with a word up there I would have picked a palindrome, a word that you can read both ways. Like the Dutch word for spoon for example: "LEPEL". I don't know what the meaning of that would be, but it would be kind of funny to have a giant word like that floating above the street. I can't find the meaning behind CULT either, so we might as well put LEPEL up there as well.

I guess I'm just not hip enough to get it. This district is known for its art scene and museums. So the CULT sign definitely must have a meaning behind it. For now, I'll just walk around here, and let my subconscious brain function as a sponge, and soak up all of the creativity put out by others and share it with you.

Do you know any fun words you can read both ways?
