The Sea

The sea is very inspirational to me. There's almost something spiritual about it. It's totally wild on the surface because of the strong wind today. There are kite-surfers riding the waves really fast. But deep down below the sea is probably really calm and quiet.

The average person that doesn't really know much about the subject, like me, can only wonder about how powerful, deep, cold, and dark the sea can be at the deepest parts of the ocean. So the only thing we can do is marvel at its expansiveness from the surface, and to have respect for it as if it has a spirit.

When I go to the beach, I always want to swim. But with the low temperature today, it's not a day for swimming, so the least I can do is touch the water with my hand. It is sort of a ritual I have. Just to make a connection. And I guess, it is an expression of my respect for the deep dark water of the North Sea.

It's also a reminder that we are evolutionary creatures that once crawled out of the water millions of years ago. Now, in the 21st-century western world, we tend to forget that we are actually animals in a way. We think we've evolved into these superior human beings that can control everything.

But in reality, we can be weak compared to nature. Because nature will do whatever it wants. Disasters can strike at any moment: hurricanes, earthquakes, pandemics! The only thing we can do is to ask if nature can be kind to us. Maybe it will listen, and maybe it will listen even more if we are kind to nature as well.
